The Hasty Pudding Theatricals Honors Octavia Spencer as 2017 Woman Of The Year with Parade

The Hasty Pudding Theatricals Celebrate Oscar winning Actress Octavia Spencer as 2017 Woman Of The Year.

The Hasty Pudding Theatricals is the oldest theatrical organization in the United States and is part of the The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 (Harvard University). Each year The Hasty Pudding Theatricals selects and honors a Man and Woman of the Year "who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment". This year, Golden Globe nominated actor Ryan Reynolds was tapped as the 2017 Man of the Year and will  be feted in early February. Who was selected as the 2017 Woman of the Year? None other than Hidden Figures costarOctavia Spencer.

Octavia Spencer has been a constant presence on the television and on the big screen since winning her Oscar in 2012. Most recently Spencer stars in Hidden Hidden Figures which has garnered her a second Academy Award nomination. It is great to see her talent continue to be recognized not only by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences but also by the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. 

Established in 1951, the Woman of the Year award is the Hasty Pudding Theatricals oldest honor. It has been bestowed upon many remarkably talented entertainers including Debbie Reynolds, Mary Tyler More, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Dame Helen Mirren, and last year's honoree Kerry Washington. Octavia Spencer joins a group of notable women and entertainment icons.

The Woman of the Year festivities started of in Cambridge, MA in Harvard University's Farkas Hall with a celebratory roast for Spencer. Guan-Ye Chen and Dan Milashewski started off the roast referencing Spencer's start in entertainment, playing the role of nurse over 20 times. The actress sang James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" as a nod to her role in Get On Up to close out the roast. Spencer then able received her pot and kisses on each cheek from Hasty Pudding Theatricals actors Darren LaPointe and Wynne Stagnaro.

The presentation was followed by a press conference where Spencer answered questions from press and those submitted by fans via the Hasty Pudding Theatricals Facebook page. The actor answered questions that ran the gamut from acting to politics to iconic women.
